06 Apr 2017 - Find niches to build on for sustainable growth

KUCHING: Local councils in the state must find their own niches to build on for sustainable growth.

Ministry of Local Government permanent secretary Bakrie Zaini said councils must go beyond merely collecting rates and providing local services.

“Councils must look into their niche and build upon it with government development funding.

“With the Pan Borneo (highway), all districts have great potential to grow and we must plan ahead to create economic vibrancy for local businesses and communities to benefit,” he said when chairing the quarterly meeting with 23 council secretaries here yesterday.

06 Apr 2017 - Penguang: Dumping of chicken wings illegal

SIBU: The massive dumping of chicken wings at Quarry Road in Bukit Aup tantamounts to illegal dumping, says Assistant Minister for Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil. He said the council can take necessary action against those responsible.

“I mean anybody who comes across this kind of activity must report it to the relevant authorities like the council and even the police if they are suspicious of something not quite right,” he said when contacted yesterday

Penguang was asked to comment on the media report on the dumping of chicken wings, which drew villagers to the site to dig out the chicken parts.

He said Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee had rightly pointed out that the source and quality of the chicken wings were unknown, hence not fit for consumption.

25 Mar 2017 - Penguang: Grading of coffeeshops must continue

SIBU: All local councils in the state are urged to continue with the grading of coffeeshops to ensure high level of hygiene and cleanliness for the wellbeing of  patrons.

Assistant Minister for Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil said the exercise had somehow slowed down of late but  it should be continued.

“It must be an overall assessment (of the premises) and not just confined to cleanliness of toilets.

“Now, I notice it (the grading exercise) has slowed down a bit.

“Issue notice to any operator who does not comply with the terms and conditions (of the licence). If they (premises) are found not clean and hygienic, the councils can choose not to renew or even revoke their licences after giving ample notice.
