Don’t involve ‘outsiders’ in gotong-royong – Dr Sim
Posted on : 30 Apr 2017  Source of News: The Borneo Post

KUCHING: A ‘gotong-royong’ campaign should involve the local community rather than recruiting an outside workforce to do the job.

Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, in pointing this out yesterday, said getting other people to do the community work had altered the meaning of ‘gotong-royong’.

He said the purpose of the cleaning campaign was also to promote team work among locals besides providing a platform for them to enhance better understanding and foster closer ties.

While working together to keep the environment clean, the people should realise that they have played a role to look after the neighbourhood they lived in, he said at a ‘gotong-royong’ campaign at Penrissen Camp here yesterday.

Dr Sim, who is Batu Kawah assemblyman and SUPP president, also pledged a RM20,000 government grant for the camp to purchase various cleaning equipment.

Following suit were Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang, Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris

Buang and Stakan assemblyman Dato Sri Mohammad Ali Mahmud, who each pledged government allocations worth RM10,000.
