Penguang: Grading of coffeeshops must continue
Posted on : 25 Mar 2017  Source of News: Borneo Post Online

SIBU: All local councils in the state are urged to continue with the grading of coffeeshops to ensure high level of hygiene and cleanliness for the wellbeing of  patrons.

Assistant Minister for Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil said the exercise had somehow slowed down of late but  it should be continued.

“It must be an overall assessment (of the premises) and not just confined to cleanliness of toilets.

“Now, I notice it (the grading exercise) has slowed down a bit.

“Issue notice to any operator who does not comply with the terms and conditions (of the licence). If they (premises) are found not clean and hygienic, the councils can choose not to renew or even revoke their licences after giving ample notice.

“If  they (councils) want to close (the premises), they must get the Health Department to do a joint inspection with them,” Penguang said yesterday, stressing the importance of stringent enforcement.

“There are many Grade C coffeeshops around where their workers would clean the tables and let the food scraps fall to the gound,” he lamented.

The Marudi assemblyman said at the time of inspection, the council could issue notice to premises found not very clean so the operator could make some improvements.
