Action against officers involved, if need be, in misuse of millions case

KUCHING: Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the government would take action if necessary following the investigation into the case of officers misusing millions that belonged to Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

He said he had instructed the Local Government and Housing Ministry’s permanent secretary Bakri Zaini to investigate the case after the Auditor-General’s report showed the suspicious payment and activities.

“As soon as we have the result, we will make the announcement. It will be transparent. Investigation should be done properly, not in a hurry,” Dr Sim said when met at the 11th National Secondary Students Chinese Creative Writing Competition prize presentation ceremony here yesterday.

He hopes to get the results as soon as possible.

Another investigation would be done if this one is not done properly, he said.

The Audit-General Report 2016 disclosed that the corporation paid out RM2.88 million to two contractors for paint jobs they did not do.

The report also showed advance payment totalling RM16.06 million allegedly for a road upgrading project in Sibu without authorisation, resulting in the government incurring RM1.77 million in interest charges.

HDC also made payment of RM30.40 million without verification by the officer with RM20.77 million in payment vouchers that were unsupported by payment certificates.
